February lows average about 20F against January's 19F, so the cold season holds its grip well past the turn of the year on any pipe sitting in an unheated cavity.

Common questions

How much does a plumber cost?

It depends on the job and how bad the problem is. That is why the first step is a phone call. Describe the problem and get your free estimate on the phone, with upfront pricing.

Will I talk to a real person?

Yes, you will.

Do I need to fill out a form?

No forms and no waiting on emailed quotes. One phone call is all it takes.

Can I get help at night or on a weekend?

We have plumbers ready to help families in the community 24/7, but moment-to-moment availability depends on demand. Call to find out how soon we can service your home.

Should I wait to call?

You already know that plumbing problems don't go away on their own. And waiting just increases the risks to your house. Plumbers see this hesitation all the time. Instead of regretting not calling earlier, just make that 2-minute call now and get your free estimate.

People also ask

Is a cast iron stack in an old row home worth replacing?

There is no fixed figure: cast iron rusts inward, so the outside stays convincing long after the wall of the pipe has gone thin, particularly at the joints. Replacing a serving section while the wall is already open costs less disruption than coming back for it later.

Is there a lead service line at my address?

The water authority serving the address keeps a service line inventory and can tell you what material is recorded for the property, which is the fastest answer available. Replacement programmes are run by the authority, so any work on the public side is arranged through them.

Will home insurance cover a leak inside a party wall?

That depends entirely on the wording of the policy and on the cause, and the pipe and the damage it caused are frequently treated as separate questions. Attached homes add a second question about which policy answers when water crosses the wall, so contact your insurance provider and ask them directly before work begins.

What causes a high water bill with no visible leak?

The common culprits are a line inside a wall, a length under the basement slab, or the stretch between the meter and where the plumbing branches. A toilet that refills on its own accounts for a surprising share of these, and it is the cheapest thing to rule out.

The basement is damp. Is that plumbing or groundwater?

Both are common in older housing and they look alike at first, though groundwater usually arrives after rain and along the base of the wall while a plumbing leak keeps going in dry weather and stays near one run. In attached homes a wet patch on your side can also be fed from the other half, which is worth ruling out before anyone starts chasing the foundation.
