Port Carbon's unique plumbing challenges

About 118 nights a year below freezing, when uninsulated crawlspace lines give out

The oldest blocks in town run plumbing decades older than the newer builds toward Palo Alto

First frost typically lands around October 30

Seasonal timing

Around Oct 30 is the median first frost, and the outdoor spigot is the first fixture in the house to feel it.

Common questions

How much does a plumber cost?

It depends on the job and how bad the problem is. That is why the first step is a phone call. Describe the problem and get your free estimate on the phone, with upfront pricing.

Will I talk to a real person?

Yes, you will.

Do I need to fill out a form?

No forms and no waiting on emailed quotes. One phone call is all it takes.

Can I get help at night or on a weekend?

We have plumbers ready to help families in the community 24/7, but moment-to-moment availability depends on demand. Call to find out how soon we can service your home.

Should I wait to call?

You already know that plumbing problems don't go away on their own. And waiting just increases the risks to your house. Plumbers see this hesitation all the time. Instead of regretting not calling earlier, just make that 2-minute call now and get your free estimate.

People also ask

Is there a shutoff for the irrigation line separate from the house?

Usually yes, and on most systems it sits with the backflow assembly rather than at the main. Irrigation piping is shallow and it drains through a blowout port or a low drain valve. Getting that done before frost is what keeps the backflow device from cracking.

Why does the outdoor tap knock when I shut it off?

That knock is water hammer, and on an outdoor line it usually means a long unsecured run of pipe between the shutoff and the wall. Old strapping works loose over the years. A plumber can add support or an arrestor so the pipe stops slamming against the framing.

How do I know if a spigot leak is inside the wall?

The usual sign is that everything looks dry outside while a stain or a musty smell shows up on the inside of the same wall, and it worsens only while the tap is running. Old plaster hides it for a long time. Once it's suspected, keeping that tap shut is the safe move.

Do I need a backflow device on an outdoor tap?

Many local water systems ask for a vacuum breaker on any hose connection, and most newer sillcocks have one built into the head. Older taps in New Philadelphia and around here often don't. Adding one is a small job and it keeps hose water from being pulled back into the house supply if pressure drops.

Is there anything to check on the hydrant before the ground freezes?

Two things are worth confirming: that it drains fully after use, and that the ground around the base isn't staying saturated. A hydrant that can't drain will freeze in the standpipe. Fixing it after the ground hardens is much more disruptive.
