Halifax's unique plumbing challenges

About 109 nights a year below freezing, when uninsulated crawlspace lines give out

The oldest blocks in town run plumbing decades older than the newer builds toward Millersburg

First frost typically lands around November 2

Seasonal timing

Between a 23F average January low and first frost around Nov 2, the window for finding an exposed crawlspace run closes early here.

Common questions

How much does a plumber cost?

It depends on the job and how bad the problem is. That is why the first step is a phone call. Describe the problem and get your free estimate on the phone, with upfront pricing.

Will I talk to a real person?

Yes, you will.

Do I need to fill out a form?

No forms and no waiting on emailed quotes. One phone call is all it takes.

Can I get help at night or on a weekend?

We have plumbers ready to help families in the community 24/7, but moment-to-moment availability depends on demand. Call to find out how soon we can service your home.

Should I wait to call?

You already know that plumbing problems don't go away on their own. And waiting just increases the risks to your house. Plumbers see this hesitation all the time. Instead of regretting not calling earlier, just make that 2-minute call now and get your free estimate.

People also ask

Do I need a sump pump in a basement this old?

Depends on whether water actually shows up, and where. Basements with a perimeter drain and a pit generally need a working pump; a dry stone basement on high ground may never have had one. A check valve and a tested float matter more than the pump's size.

Should I worry about the cast iron drain stack?

Only if it's showing symptoms: slow drains on multiple fixtures, staining down the outside of the stack, or a musty smell in the basement. Plenty of these stacks in houses near Duncannon are still working fine after seventy years. The horizontal sections at the bottom go first.

The house shares a wall with the neighbour. Does that affect the plumbing?

Shared walls usually mean the plumbing was built to a common plan, so what fails in one house on the row tends to appear in the next. The wall itself stays warmer than an exterior one, which helps in winter. The trade-off is that a leak inside it is harder to reach.
