Altoona's unique plumbing challenges

About 121 nights a year below freezing, when uninsulated crawlspace lines give out

The oldest blocks in town run plumbing decades older than the newer builds toward Hollidaysburg

First frost typically lands around October 21

Seasonal timing

Once frost sets in around October 21, any outdoor spigot still under pressure becomes the weak point, and about 121 freezing nights follow it.

Common questions

How much does a plumber cost?

It depends on the job and how bad the problem is. That is why the first step is a phone call. Describe the problem and get your free estimate on the phone, with upfront pricing.

Will I talk to a real person?

Yes, you will.

Do I need to fill out a form?

No forms and no waiting on emailed quotes. One phone call is all it takes.

Can I get help at night or on a weekend?

We have plumbers ready to help families in the community 24/7, but moment-to-moment availability depends on demand. Call to find out how soon we can service your home.

Should I wait to call?

You already know that plumbing problems don't go away on their own. And waiting just increases the risks to your house. Plumbers see this hesitation all the time. Instead of regretting not calling earlier, just make that 2-minute call now and get your free estimate.

People also ask

Why is there no hot water after a cold night?

Often the cold inlet or a nearby line has frozen, so the tank cannot refill. Other times the pilot or the burner has simply gone out. Either way it is worth checking whether other fixtures have full pressure before assuming the heater is the fault.

Do I need to report a frozen pipe to my insurer right away?

That depends on your policy terms, and your insurance provider is the one to ask. Many policies have notice requirements and conditions about heat being maintained in the house. Keep the damaged section of pipe if it gets cut out.

What should I do first if a supply line bursts?

Close the main shutoff, then kill power to the water heater at the breaker if the tank could run dry. After that the water needs to be off while the split is found. A burst line rarely leaks where the ice formed, which is why the wet spot and the damage are often in different rooms.

Does galvanised pipe freeze differently than copper?

It fails differently. Galvanised has usually narrowed with scale by the time it is this old, so it freezes solid quicker and splits along the seam or at a threaded joint. Copper tends to split along a straight run and can sometimes be patched more cleanly.
